New River Greenway
New River Greenway Construction Continues
The Broward County Greenways System is a countywide network of safe and clean bicycle, equestrian and pedestrian paths, sidewalks, nature trails and waterways. Broward County, together with the Florida Department of Transportation, identified improvements for the New River section of the Greenways System, from 136 Avenue to east of State Road 7, that could be incorporated into the I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project.
One of the first activities the concessionaire undertook was Phase I of the improvements to the New River Greenway, from 136 Avenue to University Drive. The existing path from 136 Avenue to Pine Island, which was located on the south bank of the canal, was relocated to the north bank of the North New River Canal providing separation from I-595 traffic. The path from Pine Island Road to University Drive, on the north bank of the canal, was replaced with a new 12-foot wide concrete pathway.
Phase I construction began mid-June 2009 on the west end of the Greenway near 136 Avenue. The improvements are expected to be completed in the summer of 2010. After construction of the path, the contractor will restore areas that have been disturbed by the project. Broward County will then finish the Greenway path with landscaping, benches and additional beautification.
Phase II of the New River Greenway will also be designed and constructed by I 595 Express, LLC. It will start just west of Davie Road on the south side of the North New River Canal. This portion of the Greenway will be constructed to just east of State Road 7. The construction began in May 2010 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Broward County, as with Phase I, will then finish the Greenway path with landscaping, benches and additional beautification.
